Tween Readers Ages 9-12
Reading Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins. Gregor falls through a laundry chute in his NYC apartment to a world inside the earth, whose strange inhabitants think he is the key to an ancient prophecy. Family Story Night for Everyone!
Kickoff the summer reading program as we follow the shadowy clues with the Prying Mantis Detective Agency, encountering Itsy-Bitsy Spiders, a Flea Circus, a chorus line and a little white duck to solve the case of the missing caterpillar. Whether you’re new or experienced at this hobby, come for crafty fun. Bring your photos and any supplies you’re willing to share. The library will have pens, paper, and idea books for your inspiration. Don’t have an album? Make a mini one from our photo safe card stock to scrapbook a specific event, like a party. Drop off your Growing Readers (aged 4-8) for a program, craft and book chosing time! Tonight’s singing family will have everyone on their feet with interactive bug songs and patriotic classics. Tween Readers Ages 9-12
Reading The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, 11-year-old Parvana has rarely been outdoors. Barred from attending school, shopping at the market, or even playing in the streets of Kabul, the heroine is trapped inside her family's one-room home. That is, until the Taliban hauls away her father and Parvana realizes that it's up to her to become the "breadwinner" and disguise herself as a boy to support her mother, two sisters, and baby brother. Family Program
Learn which insect makes that buzzing noise you hear on the towpath! D& R Canal Naturalist Stephanie Fox will start this program at the library and talk about some of the bugs that you may see in your own yard. Then she’ll walk with us over to the canal so we can hunt for these bugs in their native habitat.

Family Movie Night
Bring along a friend – an insect friend, that is, for the bug show & tell before the movie starts. Then, colorful close-up photography and an original music score combined with facts about insect habitats and life cycles make for a family film that is aesthetically pleasing, awe-inspiring and informative. Gardeners - learn about the multitude of insects in your own garden -- which are beneficial and which are destroyers, who eats who and why... we are not as separate from nature as we might think. Tween Readers Ages 9-12
The Lizard Guys will bring out their live insects, like millipedes, cockroaches, tarantulas, and scorpions as well as a few of their predators. You’ll learn some interesting facts about these bugs that have bad reputations, and maybe even be brave enough to let them crawl on you!

Butterfly expert and photographer Loretta Shigo will bring locally gathered milkweed and Monarch butterfly caterpillars to show and talk about. Learn how these amazing butterflies travel all the way to Mexico every winter and then come back to our area in the summer. *Sponsored by the Peggy Lewis Art Foundation which runs the gallery in the library.

Family Field Trip
Meet at the Howell Living History Farm for the 1:00 demonstration about beekeeping and the honey harvest at their outdoor bee boxes. Afterwards, take part in a craft sponsored by the library. The farm will have honey for sale. www.howellfarm.com

Tween Readers 9-12
Reading Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett. A Vermeer painting is stolen. Petra and Calder, two bright, quirky sixth-graders, come together to solve the crime that has the whole world baffled. But tracking down the Vermeer isn’t easy, as Calder and Petra try to figure out what a set of pentominos (mathematical puzzle pieces), a mysterious book about unexplainable phenomena have to do with a centuries old artwork. Bring your suggestions for what you think would make a great read for our Book Bash to pick titles for our next few meetings. Pizza will be served!

If you read ten books or hours through any summer reading program, you may come to the Reader’s Breakfast at the Lambertville Public School. Just drop off your documentation from the program (a signed reading log or certificate) ahead of time.
